It started as a last minute thought. I had been sitting on my butt for close to a month, barely training and with the Sambo National Champs just around the corner, I had to kick start my training.
Nursing an injured AC joint and juggling a full time job however, was making my effort to train somewhat laughable. I was slipping into a mess of TV, takeaway and laziness. I needed a kick in the arse, BIG TIME!
My 30th birthday was also coming up. The thought of having another birthday stuck in Sydney wasn’t very appealing.
Time to skip country, so I booked my flight out there and then. A gift to myself – fly to Tiger Muay Thai & MMA Training Camp in Phuket and train with some of the best coaches and athletes on the planet.
After only a few hours of training on the first day, I realized that this last minute thought of mine was possibly the best thing I could have done for myself at the time. I had been to Tiger a few years back but was not prepared for the upgrades; 5 Rings, 1 Cage, weights room and a world class wrestling and Jiu Jitsu room – I’m in combat sports heaven!!!
The camp is self-tailored to what ever you need or what ever your sport of choice is. My focus was on the Wrestling and the Jiu Jitsu. You know you’re in good hands with the likes of Brian Ebersole, Roger Huerta, Fernando Maccachero and Stuart ‘Arm triangle’ Cooper. They bring to the camp a wide mix of styles, knowledge, and professionalism and are just all round good guys.
It can be a little surreal at times. It wasn’t too long ago that I was at home watching YouTube videos of Brian’s past UFC fights and then all of a sudden I’m on a scooter racing down a Thai highway with him looking for ice to top up the daily ice bath. The fact I got to spend my 30th Birthday training with all these guys was the icing on the cake.
No matter what your goal, whether it’s training for a fight, learning something new or just trying to improve your overall health and fitness, Tiger Muay Thai is a world-class facility that will meet all your needs. I will definitely be back again.
A quick shout out to some of fighters who made my trip and training even more enjoyable – Cody, Kai, Gaz, Kiwi Matt, Leo, Kyle and a BIG thank you to Fiona Muxlow for showing me how to correctly strap my shoulder – absolute lifesaver! I wish the lot of you the best of luck in your upcoming fights.
Good people, good times.
